Portfolio company Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) has secured £16 million of new investment to accelerate the development of its rare-earth-free electric motor portfolio. The funds will be used to support the development of an extended range of rare-earth free motors with a focus on heavy commercial vehicle and industrial applications. evertiq

Northstar Ventures invested alongside Barclays Climate Ventures, PXN Ventures and the Low Carbon Innovation Fund, amongst others, deploying capital from both the North East Innovation Fund and the North East Spinout Inspire Fund. bdaily

The company’s motors eliminate the need for permanent magnets and rare-earth materials, helping customers reduce supply-chain risk while delivering competitive performance, efficiency and cost. That proposition has gained weight as OEMs look to reduce their exposure to rare-earth supply chains, and follows AEM’s 2025 licensing agreement with Sterling Tools in India. bdaily

The investment is already visible in the product roadmap. At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, AEM will unveil Titan, the largest and highest torque motor yet in the company’s proven HDRM family, ahead of first samples arriving in Q3 2027. AEM will also showcase its new integrated air-cooled electric drive system, which combines the HDRM150 motor with a matched air-cooled inverter as a drop-in solution operating at up to 700V.
